Miles held a double-digit lead at halftime but could not stop Morehouse from using good 3-point shooting in the second half to grab a 70-66 win over the Golden Bears Thursday night at Knox-Windham Gymnasium. It was the eighth straight win for the Maroon Tigers and first victory in Fairfield since 2017.
The Golden Bears (14-5, 12-5 SIAC West) jumped out early, opening a 15-3 with the help of two 3-pointers from
David Williams (14 points) and another from
Blake Wilson. The lead was as high as 13 points in the opening half and Miles led 37-27 going into the break. But Morehouse started to get its own 3-pointers to fall in the second half to help quickly erase the deficit. JerMonte Hill hit three triples and Josiah Lawson's bucket with 11:36 to go gave the Maroon Tigers their first lead, 46-45.
Morehouse would open a five-point lead but the Golden Bears would score 11 straight points to retake the lead.
Najashi Tolefree scored the first six points during the run and
Jaden Emory drained Miles' only 3-pointer of the second half for a 60-54 advantage with 5:50 left. A minute later,
Shannon Jones' lob to Jernigan was flushed home and the lead was still five points for the Golden Bears.
But the Maroon Tigers kept shooting and Miles struggled to get any offensive traction. Morehouse took the lead for good with 1:05 remaining on two Jared White free throws. Then, a tough offensive foul was called against Williams that turned the ball over and Hill hit a contested fall-away jumper over Jernigan with 25 seconds left for the final margin.
Lawson had 18 points and Hill added 16 to lead Morehouse. Jernigan recorded his fifth double-double (18 points on 6-of-9 shooting, 11 rebounds), Tolefree had 16 points and seven rebounds, and
Jayquan Hickles had six points and five rebounds for Miles, which next plays at Benedict on Thursday. Tip-off is at 6:30 p.m.
