Miles guard Samarian Franklin has been named Newcomer of the Week by the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference for her performance in three games for the Lady Bears last week.

Franklin, a freshman from Birmingham, Ala., averaged 15.7 points, 7.3 assists, 2.7 rebounds, and 1.0 steals as the Lady Bears won two games. In a win at Fort Valley State, Franklin set a career-high in points (23) and 3-point field goals (4). She had a career-high 10 assists in a road loss at Clark Atlanta. She also added 18 points in a win at Spring Hill, which was her previous career high before the FVSU contest.

On the season, Franklin is averaging 11.1 points, 4.8 assists, 2.9 rebounds and 1.7 steals. She leads Miles in scoring and assists, which is also tops in the SIAC. Franklin and the Lady Bears are back in action on Feb. 5 when they travel to face Benedict.
