MOBILE, Ala. -- Playing without two starter, Miles wasted little time getting back to its winning ways.
The Golden Bears (13-3, 11-3 SIAC West) made seven of their nine 3-pointers in the first half and led by as many as 21 points in the second half en route to an 80-72 win over Spring Hill Monday night at the Outlaw Recreation Center. It was the 18th consecutive win for the Golden Bears over the Badgers (2-16, 2-12), who made a run late before coming up short.
Miles got off to a quick start, using a 3-pointer from
David Williams and consecutive buckets by
Najashi Tolefree to open a 7-0 advantage less than two minutes into the game.
Shannon Jones and
Elijah Terry also added 3-pointer to help the Golden Bears to a 17-6 lead with 13:31 left before halftime. Williams drained three more triples and Zion Williams added another late in the half and when Tolefree scored on his last two attempts, it helped Miles obtain a 43-24 lead at the break.
Frankie Idlett (10 points, three rebounds, three assists, three steals) knocked down two free throws to start the second half, which gave Miles its largest lead of the game. While the Badgers continued to fight, they weren't making much progress in getting back into the game. When
Jaden Emory, a Spring Hill transfer, drained a 3-pointer with 12:13 left, the Golden Bears sill held a 58-38 advantage.
The Miles lead was still at 19 points when
Jayquan Hickles (eight points, six rebounds) scored inside with seven minutes remaining. But the Badgers began to make their run and cut the deficit to six points when Amaan Sanni hit a 3-pointer with 2:32 to go. But Spring Hill never got any closer and Williams closed out his night with two free throws, finishing with 19 points, six assists and four rebounds.
Sanni and Rocco Lamuno each had 24 points for Spring Hill. Tolefree scored a career-high 27 points on 12-of-20 shooting while adding five rebounds and three assists for Miles, which travels to face Clark Atlanta on Thursday. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
