JACKSON, Tenn. -- Miles was hoping that its experience in last season's NCAA Tournament would help during the opening round of the 2025 Division II South Region Tournament against top-seed and host Union.Â
But the Lady Bulldogs came out smoking, opening a double-digit lead in the first few minutes and shooting more than 50 percent from the field - and better than 46 percent from beyond the 3-point stripe - in a 107-69 win over the No. 8-seed Lady Bears at Fred DeLay Gym. The defeat brought an end to the season for Miles (22-7), which had included nine straight wins and a SIAC championship entering the contest.
Miles has been one of the best defensive teams in Division II, especially in defending the 3-point shot. But Union found the range all night, with nine different players combining for 18 3-pointers. After missing their first two, they made the next two, as part of a 14-1 run to start the game. The Lady Bears first field goal came from
Feliah Greer with 5:08 left in the first quarter. The team started to compose itself and when
Asha Shareef (five points, five rebounds) scored with 3:47 left in the opening period, the deficit was down to six points. Ninety seconds later, it was a short jumper from
Eunique McKinney, then two free throws from
Tederia Ashley set the margin at 19-13 with just under two minutes remaining in the stanza.
The Lady Bears would get no closer the rest of the night. Miles trailed by nine at the end of the first period before turnovers and tough shooting put it in a bigger hole. Union shot 57 percent from the field in the second and closed the half out with another 3-ball that gave it a 52-24 advantage at the half.
The second half saw Miles play a lot better but the deficit was too large and Union kept shooting. The Lady Bulldogs, even with a lead that was 34 points at the end of three quarters, continued to assault the Lady Bears from deep. They went 8-of-14 on three's in the fourth quarter, which made it tough for Miles to even make the score a bit closer. Still, the Lady bears continued to fight.
Makayla Rieves (eight points, six rebounds) converted a 3-point play and
Iemyiah Harris drained three consecutive 3-balls of her ownÂ
Kyra Long (eight points) made her own triple late in the game as Miles whittled a deficit that had reached 42 points back to 34 points. Still, it was not enough to keep the Lady Bears from allowing the most points in at least 25 years. The last team to even eclipse 100 points was Nova Southeastern (103) in 2015.
Harris (22 points, six rebounds, three assists, two steals), Greer (13 points, seven rebounds), and Ashley (11 points, six rebounds, two steals) were the top performers for the Lady Bears.
