It is little wonder that with as successful as the men's basketball program at Miles has been since
Fred Watson arrived in 2018, that there would still be feats that the program could still accomplish.
But on Wednesday night, after celebrating the largest senior class in program history, the Golden Bears were able to continue to reach new plateaus during the Watson era. After demolishing Kentucky State 79-50, Miles finished with an undefeated mark (12-0) at Knox-Windham Gymnasium for the first time. It also gave the newly-ranked Golden Bears - who had secured the SIAC West Division title weeks ago and is now ranked No. 25 in the country - a 23-3 overall record, which is the most regular season victories Watson has ever racked up in his 20-plus year career as a head coach. Even more, Miles was a one-point overtime loss away from going perfect in conference play (19-1) and has won 14 consecutive games.
All of these accomplishments meant that Kentucky State got a front row seat to history and the Golden Bears made sure they got a quick view of what was coming up. Miles opened the game on a 17-4 run, holding the Thorobreds (12-13, 9-11 SIAC West) to just one basket over the first seven minutes.
Rylen Walker (12 points, six rebounds, two steals),
Elijah Horton (seven points, six rebounds) and
Chase Ballard each splashed 3-pointers and
Dorion Staples (eight points)
Najashi Tolefree both had two buckets each in contributing to the early onslaught.
Miles never saw its lead dip below double digits the rest of the night. A jumper from
Alvin Miles (10 points, three assists) saw the lead cross the 20-point threshold with 4:28 left in the first half and was part of a 10-0 spurt. The Golden Bears led by as many as 27 points before halftime and held a 46-21 advantage at the break. It did not get any better in the second half for KSU. A 3-point play by Tolefree and a 3-ball from Miles opened the scoring a pushed the lead past 30 points for the first time. The Thorobreds never got closer than 24 points the rest of the night and the Golden Bears saw the lead swell as large as 34 points as everyone on the team got some minutes down the stretch.
Justin Edmondson had 17 points and Morgan Brewer added 10 points and 10 rebounds for Kentucky State. Tolefree had 18 points and a season-high 10 rebounds for his first double-double, Ballard had 16 points off the bench and
Corey Trotter added four points, eight rebounds, two blocks and three steals for the Golden Bears, who will play next in the SIAC Tournament on Mar. 5 at 4 p.m.
