MOBILE, Ala. --
Tederia Ashley posted a double-double, scoring six of her 10 points in the fourth quarter to help Miles take down Spring Hill 49-46 Monday night at the Outlaw Recreation Center. The victory gave the Lady Bears (14-6, 11-4) their 10th straight win over the Badgers (6-17, 5-11) and keeps them tied with Tuskegee atop the SIAC West Division race with four games remaining.
While Miles has had some trouble scoring the basketball of late, they were able to find a deluge of points inside and at the free throw line, which was enough to keep Spring Hill at bay. Yet it was a pair of 3-pointers - one by
Simone Johnson, the other by
Laila Minter (six points)Â - to close out the second quarter that helped the Lady Bears erase an early deficit and send the team into the half with a 24-19 lead.
Ashley and
India Brown were doing work early in the fourth. Two free throws from Brown and a jumper by Ashley had given the Lady Bears a seven-point cushion - 40-33, their largest of the game - with 7:46 left. The Badgers, though, were able to tie the contest late when Kellyn Hunter's 3-pointer - their sixth of the game - knotted the score at 45. But on the ensuing possession,
Feliah Greer got inside and scored to put Miles back ahead. Spring Hill would split two free throws to halve the deficit but Ashley took a feed from
Kiyara Howard-Garza (three points, three assists) and tossed it in off the glass for a 3-point advantage with 14 seconds remaining. Hunter's game-tying attempt wasn't true and Miles was able to secure the big victory.
Hunter had a game-high 19 points to lead Spring Hill. Ashley (10 points, 10 rebounds) tallied her third double-double of the season. while getting offensive help from Greer (nine points, five rebounds), Brown (eight points, four rebounds) and
Madison Lee (six points, three rebounds). Miles is back in action on Thursday as it travels to take on Benedict in a non-conference matchup. Tip-off is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
