10 Peace: Miles keeps streak going in dominant fashion

MOBILE, Ala. -- After spending the past two weeks playing games down to the wire - and beyond - Miles finally found some relative peace and tranquility in the second half of its 79-63 win over Spring Hill on Monday night. It was the10th consecutive victory for Miles (19-3, 15-1) and the 17th straight win for the SIAC West Division winners over the Badgers (8-14, 6-10), who were unable to replicate the nailbiter from two weeks ago when the teams played in an overtime thriller in Fairfield.

Dorion Staples had a monster night off the bench, finishing with 18 points and a season-high 12 rebounds for his first double-double of the campaign. In the second half, he seemingly had an offensive answer each time Spring Hill looked as if it was trying to make a run to get back into the game. After the Badgers had cut the deficit to two points, Staples opened Miles' scoring in the second half with a 3-pointer. Later, he topped off a 9-0 run with a bucket to give the Golden Bears their first double-digit lead - 44-33, with 17 minutes left in the game.

With eight minutes to play, the lead was down to 10 after a 3-ball from Spring Hill's Walter Peggs, Jr. But on the ensuing possession, Staples answered with his own basket from beyond the arc to push the advantage back to 13 points. Peggs made another of his five 3-pointers two minutes later, but they were sandwiched by two more baskets from Staples that pinned the Golden Bears' advantage to 69-56 with 5:24 to go.

But the Miles defense continued its lockdown ways down the stretch. After tossing a shutout over the last four minutes on Saturday against Tuskegee, the Golden Bears held the Badgers without a field goal over the final five minutes of the game. Meanwhile, Alvin Miles (18 points, three rebounds, three assists) went 7-of-8 from the free throw line, all wrapped around a steal and breakaway bucket by Najashi Tolefree (10 points, five rebounds)  that turned into a 3-point play with a minute remaining to turn out the lights on Spring Hill. The Golden Bears forced 13 turnovers that led to 13 points while doing an outstanding job protecting the basketball, with just six turnovers that turned into three points for the Badgers.

Peggs had 29 points and Steven Lyles had 13 points to lead the Badgers. Elijah Horton (12 points on 4-of-4 from the field and perfect on four free throw attempts) and Chase Ballard (nine points) were also big contributors for the Golden Bears, who play at Talladega on Thursday. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
