Miles continued its winning ways by easily dispatching Allen 75-52 on Saturday afternoon at Knox-Windham Gymnasium. The 24th-ranked Lady Bears (8-1, 5-0 SIAC West) won their seventh straight, using their smothering defense to create a multitude of scoring opportunities that the SIAC East Division-leading Lady Yellow Jackets (5-3, 5-2) could not match.
After giving up the first four points of the game, Miles quickly took the lead when Jayln Shelby drained a 3-pointer at the 7:34 mark of the opening quarter. Allen would not hold the lead again.
Madison Lee (five points, eight rebounds, three assists, four steals) would add her own 3-ball and
Mya Millner would convert a three-point play as the Lady Bears grabbed an 11-4 advantage less than five minutes into the contest. The Lady Yellow Jackets turned the ball over 11 times in the first quarter and trailed 17-8, going the final 4:45 with out scoring.
The Lady Bears started the second quarter on a 13-2 run as Millner broke free and took a feed from
Samarian Franklin on the runout for a 30-10 advantage with 4:10 left before halftime. It forced Allen to call a time out but it did not help it get any closer.
Jamaica Young's steal and layup as the buzzer sounded gave Miles a 37-17 lead at the break.
Miles would lead by as many as 27 points on multiple occasions in the third and fourth quarter and Allen never got closer than 16 points at any point in the second half. When Shelby scored at the 5:29 mark in the third quarter, the Lady Bears led 45-25 and the Lady Yellow Jackets deficit never dipped under 20 points for the remainder of the contest.
Kyla Thomas had 12 points and nine rebounds to lead Allen. Millner (14 points, seven rebounds), Franklin (14 points, four rebounds, three assists, three steasl, block),
Makayla Rieves (11 points, six rebounds),
Tawana Nevels (seven points, seven rebounds) and
Shannon Niles (six points, six rebounds, three assists) all had big performances for Miles, which plays at Edward Waters on Wednesday. Tip-off is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
