Miles used a big first quarter to defeat Delta State 69-61 Friday night in the GSC/SIAC Challenge at Knox-Windham Gymnasium in the season opener for both teams.
The Lady Bears (1-0) led by as many as 13 points in the first quarter and went into the half with a 36-21 lead. The lead remained in double figures until late in the third quarter but the Lady Statesmen (0-1) never got closer than seven points the rest of the way.
Jariyah Williamson scored 15 points and while Dakiya Toney (12 points, 10 rebounds) posted a double-double to lead Delta State.

Samarian Franklin (10) all scored in double figures for Miles, which is back in action on Tuesday, when it travels to face Union. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
