Miles used a big first quarter to defeat Delta State 69-61 Friday night in the GSC/SIAC Challenge at Knox-Windham Gymnasium in the season opener for both teams.

The Lady Bears (1-0) led by as many as 13 points in the first quarter and went into the half with a 36-21 lead. The lead remained in double figures until late in the third quarter but the Lady Statesmen (0-1) never got closer than seven points the rest of the way.

Jariyah Williamson scored 15 points and while Dakiya Toney (12 points, 10 rebounds) posted a double-double to lead Delta State. Jalyn Shelby (14), Mya Millner (12) and Samarian Franklin (10) all scored in double figures for Miles, which is back in action on Tuesday, when it travels to face Union. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
