Golden Bears win streak snapped by FVSU

FORT VALLEY, Ga. -- Miles' offense sputtered in the second half, able to only amass 33 yards after intermission in a 24-14 loss to Fort Valley State Saturday night at Wildcat Stadium. The loss snapped the Golden Bears ' three-game win streak and marked FVSU's first home win over Miles in 15 years.

Behind two 4-yard rushing touchdowns by quarterback Brinley Vandiver, Miles (3-7, 3-4 SIAC) held a 14-10 lead with 9:28 left in the second quarter. On the ensuing drive, Wildcats quarterback Saadiq Teel threw a 33-yard touchdown pass to J.T. Pendleton to put FVSU (4-5, 4-3) back in front for good. The Golden Bears drove into the red zone on its next drive, but Reid Grek's 27-yard field goal attempt was blocked and Miles ultimately went into the half trailing 17-14.

After getting 157 yards of offense in the first half, the Golden Bears struggled to move the ball in the second half. On four of its first five drives in the second half, Miles was forced to punt. There were only four plays that went longer than eight yards over the final 30 minutes, and three of them were pass completions to James Gatewood (four receptions, 46 yards). Only one drive crossed midfield, Vandiver threw an interception on another drive, and the offense never seriously threatened to score. The defense played well, but FVSU capped a 13-play, 55-yard drive with a touchdown in the third quarter that closed out the scoring.

Robert Williams had a game-high 10 tackles, (eight solo), Antonio Reeves and Braylen Jones eight had seven tackles, Spencer Voss had two tackles - both for loss - including a sack, Naszire Starkey had an interception, and Khamar Holder added four tackles, two tackles for loss, and a sack for Miles, which finishes its season on Saturday when it hosts Tuskegee in the Legacy & Legends Rivalry Game at historic Legion Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.
