Second quarter stampede tramples Miles

Miles (0-6, 0-3) allowed 31 straight points after taking an early lead against Kentucky State, ultimately succumbing to the Thorobreds 38-17 Saturday afternoon at Sloan-Alumni Stadium. Quarterback Brinley Vandiver threw for 299 yards and two touchdowns but his three interceptions - two which came in a backbreaking first half that led directly to scores - helped KSU (4-2, 4-1) build a big lead before halftime.

Ashton Whitfield got his first interception of the season on Kentucky State's opening drive and returned it 38 yards to the KSU 35 in the opening quarter. Miles got to the Thorobreds 5-yard line but ultimately settled for 22-yard field goal by Reid Grek to take an early lead. But after allowing KSU to take the lead on a 19-yard touchdown pass from Torrance Bardell to Jon McCall, Vandiver was picked off deep in Miles' end on the ensuing possession. The Thorobreds would add a field goal after the turnover for a 10-3 advantage after the first period.

KSU would score another touchdown to start the second quarter before Jamari Riley fumbled on the kickoff return to give the Thorobreds another short field. Even after a 15-yard penalty made Kentucky State have to cover the 14 yards twice, Bardell threw a scoring pass to Joshua Thomas, Jr. to extend the lead. Miles would start driving on the next series but another pick by Vandiver was returned to the Miles 5-yard line. On the next play, Jaylen Middleton punched it in and KSU held a 31-3 lead with 7:58 left before the break.

Miles would get back on the board before halftime when Vandiver capped a 59-yard drive with a 17-yard touchdown pass to Tifton Dobbs to stop the Kentucky State run and cut the deficit to 31-10 at the half.

The Golden Bears would put together a solid drive in the third quarter but lost possession when they could not convert on fourth down at the KSU 7. From there, the Thorobreds methodically went 93 yards the other way to score again on the opening play of the fourth quarter. Miles ultimately answered with a 66-yard touchdown pass from Vandiver to Glen Williams with 7:38 left. It was another stellar performance for the sophomore wide receiver, who had seven catches for a career-high 147 yards. It also marked the third straight game in which he caught a touchdown and all of them have been at least 44 yards. Miles would, again, drive deep into Kentucky State territory late in the game. But another Vandiver interception - this time at the 1-yard line - ended the scoring threat.

Robert Williams had nine tackles (eight solo) to lead the defense for Miles, which plays next week at Lane. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m.
