Oakwood put up a battle in the opening set but Miles (30-28, 25-13, 25-17) was ultimately able to dispatch the Lady Ambassadors in straight sets on Tuesday night at Knox-Windham Gymnasium. The Lady Bears (12-10) have won all five of their home matches this season and finished the season sweep of Oakwood (8-6).
Miles opened a 6-1 lead in the opening set and looked poised to take an early lead with
Jaida Lloyd serving with a 24-21 advantage. But Oakwood would survive five set points as the game churned forward, then had its own two opportunities to serve for the set. But
Karea Copeland thwarted the Lady Ambassadors with kills both times. Then, as she served,
Kori Brown took a feed from
Saraih Taylor (team-high 24 assists) to take the lead before combining with
Addisyn Doss for a block to close out the competitive set.
From there, Oakwood seemed to run out of steam and Miles took full advantage. In the second set, Brown had some big swings early (six kills) as the Lady Bears opened a 19-10 lead. Copeland closed the game with five of her seven second-set kills as Miles won going away. In the final stanza, Miles blasted away from all sides, hitting .447 (21-4-38).
Zion Rucker (7-0-9, .778),
Kayla Trawick,
Precious Sturdivant (4-0-10, .400), Doss, Brown and Copeland each had multiple kills in the final set, which was finished by an ace from Copeland, who enjoyed another huge night (22 kills, 10 digs, two aces, hitting .364).
Brown (12 kills, eight digs, .320), Trawick (four kills, team-high 11 digs), and Lloyd (22 assists, seven digs) all were big parts of the win for Miles, which next hosts the United States Sports University on Oct. 21. First serve is set for 6 p.m.
