BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- A close game got away from Miles when Tuskegee used a huge surge in the second quarter to take control of a 61-42 loss on Saturday at Bartow Arena. It was the Lady Bears' fifth loss in their last six games against the Golden Tigerettes and snapped a four-game win streak.
Kiyara Howard-Garza scored six points inside of the first 90 seconds of the game to take the early lead and a 3-pointer by
Eunique McKinney with 90 seconds left in the period staked Miles (11-4, 8-3 SIAC West) to an 11-10 lead. But Brittany Bolin answered with a 3-pointer on Tuskegee's ensuing possession that allowed it to take a 13-11 lead into the second period. It was there that the Golden Tigerettes (10-8, 7-4) put the Lady Bears in a huge hole.
Miles missed its first seven shots and turned the ball over twice to start the second and Tuskegee took advantage, scoring the first nine points of the frame.
India Brown (six points, five rebounds) stopped the skid with a short jumper at the midway point to cut the deficit to 22-13, but that would be the last time the Lady Bears would trail by less than 10 points.
Feliah Greer (seven points) would score the only other bucket in the second quarter for Miles, which went 2-of-15 from the field during the quarter and shot a paltry 27 percent for the game. Meanwhile, Tuskegee shot 62 percent in the first half in opening a 33-15 advantage going into halftime.
Greer and Brown scored on consecutive possessions and
Makayla Rieves (seven points) drained a 3-pointer late in the third quarter to bring the Lady Bears to within 41-28 at the end of the third quarter. McKinney also knocked down another 3-ball with 7:23 left in the fourth to cut the deficit to 47-35, giving brief energy to a comeback. But Tuskegee would not be denied, leading by as many as 21 points later in the quarter to close out the victory.
Bolin had a game-high 18 points and Hilani Cantone added 12 to pace Tuskegee.
Iemyiah Harris had eight points as the high scorer for Miles, which hosts Spring Hill on Monday night. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
