ATLANTA -- Having fought back from an early deficit, Miles looked to continue its recent dominance of Clark Atlanta as it entered the fourth quarter with the lead.
But the Lady Bears could not finish the deal during its first game in nearly two weeks. The Panthers barely missed a shot in the final 10 minutes, including a steady stream of free throws that saw CAU take out Miles 69-61 at Epps Gymnasium on Thursday night. It was the first win for Clark Atlanta (9-4, 5-2 SIAC East) over Miles in 10 games while seeing the Lady Bears (7-3, 5-2 SIAC West) lose a game in the ATL for the first time since the 2017-18 season.
Miles was the team with the hot hand in the third quarter. Trailing by two points at halftime and as many as six points near the midway point of the period, the Lady Bears used an 8-1 over the final three minutes to take the lead.
India Brown (eight points in nine minutes on 4-of-5 shooting) and
Feliah Greer had two buckets each, with Greer scoring the final basket after a steal by
Kiyara Howard-Garza (six points) who flipped it out to the streaking Greer right before the horn. CAU did not make a basket from the field over the final 5:54 and Miles shot 53 percent from the field to take a 45-42 lead into the fourth.
Greer scored the first six points of the fourth quarter for Miles in less than two minutes, the last of them coming on a 3-point play that gave the Lady Bears a 51-50 advantage with 8:11 remaining. CAU, though, would keep the pressure on and opened up a four-point lead before Greer drained a 3-pointer to cut the deficit to 55-54. But that was as close as the Lady Bears would get. The Panthers shot 67 percent from the floor (6-of-9) and were 15-of-18 from the free throw line in the final period (Miles shot 20 free throws for the entire game) to close out the contest.
Corianna Evans had 19 points and five blocks to lead Clark Atlanta. Greer (18 points, four rebounds, four assists, three steals),
Iemyiah Harris (13 points, two steals), and
Tederia Ashley (six points, seven rebounds) were among the top performers for Miles, which travels to Albany State on Jan. 7.
