Great Scott! Big day on the ground paces Golden Bears

BLYTHEWOOD, S.C. -- Most running backs would love to get 150 rushing yards and a touchdown in any single game. Miles tailback Jonero Scott did just that - in the first half.

Scott finished with a career-high 179 yards rushing on 26 carries and the defense had an impressive day, forcing four turnovers and adding eight quarterback sacks to stymie Allen 33-13 at District Stadium. It is the second straight win for the Golden Bears (2-2, 2-0 SIAC) who have not trailed in either of the conference games this season.

Miles got on the scoreboard first, converting a Keith Green fumble recovery into a 33-yard field goal by Roderick Smith. Scott really got it going on a drive to end the first quarter, racking up 40 yards on five carries to get the Golden Bears close. Then, on 4th-and-2, Miles got all of it and then some as Kamren Ivory connected on a 19-yard touchdown pass to Jaih Andrews - his third scoring catch in the last two games - for a 10-0 lead.

Scott pushed the lead even bigger midway through the second quarter, capping an 8-play, 72-yard drive with a 20-yard touchdown run - his first of the year - as Miles extended the lead to 17-0. The Yellow Jackets would add a score late in the half but the Golden Bears still went into the half with a 17-6 lead.

Smith blasted his second 50-plus yard punt to start the second half (54 yards) to set Allen up on its own 10. That turned into instant points for Miles when Roc Dowdell and JaMichael Rogers (four tackles, one sack) met Yellow Jackets quarterback Jamir Dismukes in the end zone for a safety to push the advantage to 19-6. While Ivory struggled throwing the ball, he was able to use his legs to get the Golden Bears back into the end zone. He followed a 15-yard run with a twisting, turning 10-yard dash for a touchdown that gave Miles a 26-6 lead with just more than seven minutes remaining in the third quarter. On the next play from scrimmage, Donshae Gaither picked off a pass from Dismukes as the defensive front continued to get pressure in the Allen backfield all game.

Dowdell had seven tackles and 3.5 sacks, Green (seven tackles) split a sack with Dowdell. The defensive backs got in on the action as well, as Malachi Oglen, Carson Pritchett and Jayln Chambers each were credited with a quarterback sack. When Allen did throw the ball, passes were being challenged all game. Jeremiah Hudson-Davis had three tackles, three pass break ups and an interception he returned 35 yards. Linebacker Giovanni Williams got in on the action as well, snatching one out the air while he was on the ground to earn his first interception of the season.

As Allen started to make some noise in the fourth quarter, cutting the deficit to 26-13 and having the ball in Miles territory after an interception, the defense put its finishing touches on the afternoon. closing out two drives with a fourth-down sack and an interception. Edward Osley closed the show with a 28-yard touchdown run with 1:49 left to create the final score.

Miles is back in action next week when it hosts Central State for Homecoming. Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m.
