Miles was unable to cobble together much offense this weekend as was swept in its three-game series against Tuskegee. The Lady Bears dropped both games of a doubleheader, 5-1 and 15-1, on Saturday before falling 8-0 on Sunday at the Miles Softball Complex.
Abigail Boudreaux was the only player with multiple hits on the weekend and senior
Kiara Cobb - playing in her final home conference series - stole three bases for Miles (8-25, 5-14 SIAC), which will need to win next weekend at LeMoyne-Owen and get some help to earn a spot in the SIAC Tournament.
GAME 1 - Tuskegee 5, Miles 1
The Lady Bears were in this contest until the end, but a couple of untimely miscues helped Tuskegee take the opening game of the series. The Golden Tigerettes scored single runs in the first and fifth innings on throwing errors as they stole third base. Down 1-0 in the fourth, Miles had a golden opportunity to tie the score. Cobb led off the inning with a single and promptly stole second base. She advanced to third with one out but
Michelle Tanks popped out on the infield and
Genia Hall struck out to end the threat.
Still trailing 2-0 in the seventh, Miles starter
Desalynn Nesbitt looked to have pitched the Lady Bears out of trouble, getting a routine ground ball to second base that would have ended the inning. But the throw was dropped at first base, which allowed two Tuskegee runners to score. A run-scoring triple followed and TU had grabbed a 5-0 advantage. Nesbitt, who allowed just six hits and one earned run while striking out four, was the tough-luck loser in the circle but her RBI single in the seventh that scored
Zyian Dunning accounted for the only Lady Bears run.
GAME 2 - Tuskegee 15, Miles 1 (5)
The Lady Bears committed eight errors in this contest and Tuskegee scored in every inning in winning this game by the eight-run rule. Errors led to the first five runs of the game for Tuskegee in the first two innings. Then, a seven-run third inning for the Golden Tigerettes really put the game out of reach Meanwhile, Miles was unable to get anything going offensively, with its only baserunner in the first four innings coming on an error that allowed Tanks to reach in the first.
Tuskegee was two outs away from posting a no-hitter when
Shalayiah Waid stroked a solid single to left field for the Lady Bears' first hit. She took second on an error, stole third base, and scored the lone run on a RBI groundout by
Jordan Davis.
Auriel Moultry also added a hit in the final inning for Miles.
GAME 3 - Tuskegee 8, Miles 0 (5)
Miles pitchers
Shakayla Terry and Boudreaux allowed just four hits but five more errors, four walks and three wild pitches gave Tuskegee all the ammunition it needed to complete the sweep. The Golden Tigerettes did not need a hit to score either of their first four runs. In fact, a single by Boudreaux was the first hit of the game in the second inning for the Lady Bears. But Tuskegee got its first hit in the third inning and was part of a five-run frame that turned a close game into a rout.
The Lady Bears had a couple of opportunities to get on the board in the third and fourth innings. In the third,
Takyla Smoot led of with a single but she was thrown out trying to steal second.
Indya Johnson followed with her own single but she was erased on a fielder's choice by Cobb, who would then steal second and third bases. But Cobb was called out for runner's interference on a questionable call that saw Tuskegee chasing an uncatchable foul ball. In the fourth, Tanks singled with one out but her courtesy runner,
Jada McCalebb, was called out for leaving too early on a stolen base attempt that ended the inning.
