SAVANNAH, Ga. -- Miles opened their run at the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference with a quarterfinal matchup against Allen, a team that nearly pulled an upset two weeks ago at Knox-Windham Gymnasium.Â
But the Golden Bears didn't take long in grabbing the lead and taking control of the game on Thursday. Miles went ahead, for good, less than three minutes into the contest and drained 10 3-pointers overall, pulling away for a 66-51 win over the Yellow Jackets at Tiger Arena. The win was the 10th straight for the Golden Bears (22-5) and advances them to the conference semifinals on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. against the winner of Friday's Morehouse-Edward Waters game.
At one point, Miles connected on five straight 3-pointers.
Truitt Spencer hit the first two,
Rylen Walker and
Chase Ballard hit from deep on back-to-back possessions, and finally
Elijah Horton made his own 3-ball to give the Golden Bears a 22-14 advantage with 6:40 left in the first half.
Mykayle Carter closed out the half with his own bucket from beyond the arc and Allen trailed 28-18 at the break.
Miles continued to fire 3-point salvos in the second half. Carter drained another one to start the second half and
Alvin Miles had his own triple to close an 8-0 run and give the Golden Bears a 36-21 advantage in the opening minutes of the second half. Carter's third 3-pointer of the night was followed by two free throws by Miles after a technical foul on Allen's G'Shan Aldridge, for a 51-32 lead - Miles' biggest of the night.
The Yellow Jackets did not go away quietly. They began to turn up their full-court pressure, which led to some easy baskets. A 3-point play by Tavis Bridges after a Miles turnover cut the deficit to eight points with 4:44 to go. The Golden Bears looked a little lost on offense and with the momentum having fully shifted, head coach
Fred Watson called a timeout to pull his troops together.
Whatever play was designed in the timeout became a well-needed result. Miles knocked down a mid-range jumper as the shot clock was running low to push the lead back into double digits for the Golden Bears. Allen answered with two free throws, but on the next possession, as the shot clock expired, Carter banked a 3-pointer in off the glass to give Miles an 11-point lead. It was the start of eight straight points by the Golden Bears, concluded by two free throws from Ballard (seven points, two assists), that gave Miles a 64-47 lead with 1:34 left and put an end to any thoughts of an Allen comeback.
Mike Best had 12 points off the bench and Tyriq McAdoo added 10 points to lead the Yellow Jackets. Carter had 21 points and a career-high 11 rebounds for his first double-double of the season. Miles added 18 points, five rebounds and five assists.Â
