ALBERTVILLE, Ala. -- Miles opened its 2024 softball season at the Charger Chillout, perennially one of the top tournaments in the region featuring multiple teams with their eyes on conference, regional and national championships.
The Lady Bears were unable to get their offense on track in their season-opening contests, falling 5-1 to Christian Brothers before dropping an 8-0 decision to Georgia Southwestern State at chilly Sand Mountain Park on Thursday. Miles (0-2) was not able to muster much of an offensive attack, with just three hits and nine total baserunners between the two games.
GAME 1 - Christian Brothers 5, Miles 1
The Lady Bears fell behind early and could not catch up to the pitching of CBU's Emily Schooler (2-0), who struck out 14 batters in the complete-game victory.
Desalynn Nesbitt (0-1) had runners on in every inning but the first but did a good job minimizing the damage, allowing just five hits and four earned runs in her first start for Miles. An inside-the-park home run in the second and a two-run single in the fifth - both with one out - were the big difference in the game.
Miles got on the board in the sixth.
Mikayla Williams reached on a bunt single and advanced to third on a throwing error. She scored on a sac bunt by
Jordan Davis. The Lady Bears also had a couple more opportunities to put up some runs. In the second, Nesbitt walked and with one out,
Genia Hall singled. Both runners were moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt by
Shalayiah Waid but Navaeh Rader struck out swinging to end the threat. In the fifth, Hall led off with her second hit of the game and promptly stole second before being stranded.
GAME 2 - Georgia Southwestern State 8, Miles 0 (6)
Despite making more contact in the nightcap, the Lady Bears were no-hit in a game ended early by the 8-run rule. GSW (3-3) scored all eight of its runs with two outs, including a five-run fifth that put the game out of reach.
Down 1-0 in the first,
Indya Johnson got a one-out walk, stole second and ended up on third on a wild pitch. But the Lady Bears could not get her home with
Abigail Boudreaux grounding out to end the threat. Boudreaux looked like she had Miles' first hit when she poked one to right field in the fourth. But with the right fielder playing shallow, she was able to throw her out at first base by a half-step, keeping the Lady Bears hitless.
In the bottom of the fifth, Miles had one more good chance to get on the board when
Michelle Tanks and
Takyla Smoot both drew walks. But
Auriel Moultry grounded out and snuffed out the scoring opportunity.
UP NEXT - The Lady Bears play two more at the Charger Chillout on Friday. First, it will be Mississippi College at 1 p.m. followed by a 3:30 p.m. tilt against Shorter.
