Lady Bears get back on track

MOBILE, Ala. -- One game after seeing their program-record 16-game win streak halted, the Miles women's basketball team got back on track Monday night against Spring Hill.

Using a big surge in the third quarter, the Lady Bears erased a double-digit deficit and pulled away in the fourth quarter for a 67-57 win over the Badgers at the Outlaw Recreation Center. Miles (17-2, 13-1 SIAC West) used its defense to turn the tide, scoring 24 points off turnovers - 18 in the second half - to help sweep the season series from Spring Hill (4-14, 4-10).

The Badgers were a tough out last week when the two teams played in Fairfield and it was much of the same in the first half of this contest. Spring Hill used a 14-2 run in the second quarter to open a 33-22 lead late in the period. A steal and layup by Iemyiah Harris right before the buzzer brought the deficit back into single digits going into halftime. It also was a signal of things to come in the second half for the Lady Bears.

Miles dominated the third quarter from the start, scoring the first 12 points of the period. Asha Shareef took a feed from Imani Williams (10 points, three rebounds, two assists) to give Miles the lead for good with 5:31 left in the quarter. On the next possession, Shareef (two points, four rebounds, two assists) returned the favor to Williams and the Lady Bears lead 36-33. Two Spring Hill free throws stopped the onslaught, but just momentarily. The Badgers could get nothing going on the offensive end, missing their first eight shots from the field and turning the ball over eight times. A layup by Ariel Thompson right before the buzzer was the only basket Miles allowed in the third but the Lady Bears still led 41-38 with 10 minutes to go.

Spring Hill did not go away quietly. Tiana Smith nailed a 3-pointer early in the quarter to give the Badgers a one-point edge but Harris answered with her own triple to put Miles back on top 45-43 with 8:27 remaining. Spring Hill would get to within a single point on four different occasions before the Lady Bears finally put the game away. Harris fed Madison Lee (10 points, four rebounds) for a bucket before scoring the next seven points to finish a 9-0 run, the last two coming after a steal by Kiyara Howard-Garza (four points), that gave Miles a 62-52 advantage with two minutes left. The Lady Bears would hit 5-of-6 free throws down the stretch as the lead got as high as 13 points.

Thompson (13 points) and Emyiah Harris (10 points) were the only double-digit scorers for Spring Hill. Harris (22 points on 8-of-12 shooting, three rebounds, four assists) had a big night but Kelli Finkley (seven points), Tederia Ashley (five points, six rebounds, two steals) and Nuriyah Slaton (team-high eight rebounds) played big roles for Miles, which travels to play Savannah State in a non-conference matchup on Wednesday. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.
