Miles saw its 15-game home win streak come to an end Saturday afternoon in a 63-56 loss to Kentucky State. It was the second straight loss overall for the Lady Bears (17-4, 13-2) and the first defeat at Knox-Windham Gymnasium since dropping a decision to Tuskegee in January 2023.
The Lady Breds (17-5, 13-3) allowed the opening basket to the Lady Bears, then scored 11 straight points to take the lead for good. Miles got early buckets from
Imani Williams and
India Brown (four points) but did not make a field goal over the last five minutes of the quarter and trailed 19-7 after the first 10 minutes. The KSU shot 53 percent in the first half and held a lead as large as 14 points before going into the break with a 36-24 advantage.
The Lady Bears started working the ball inside to start the second half and got immediate results.
Tederia Ashley had three straight buckets to open the third quarter and
Madison Lee (six points, five assists, two steals) capped an 8-1 start with her own layup to bring Miles to within 37-32. All nine baskets for Miles in the third quarter were in the paint and it helped keep the team within striking distance, trailing 49-42 with one quarter to go.
Things began to open up a bit from the outside in the final period.
Iemyiah Harris (nine points, three rebounds) knocked down her first 3-pointer less than three minutes into the fourth. After KSU had opened a 13-point advantage, she was fouled while shooting a 3-ball and made all three freebies to get the deficit back into single digits.
Simone Johnson (nine points, four rebounds, three assists) would later drain her own triple with 1:43 to go and the Lady Bears trailed just 60-56. But that would be the last points KSU would allow as Miles missed its final four shots from the field to stymie any comeback plans.
Gracen Kerr scored a game-high 25 points and Taleah Dilworth added 17 to lead Kentucky State. Ashley (16 points, 11 rebounds, three blocks) and Williams (11 points, two steals, one block) led the charge for Miles, which hosts Central State on Monday. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
