With the game tied and less than 30 seconds remaining, Miles got defensive stops on two straight possessions and made two free throws with 11 seconds left to secure a 58-56 win over Edward Waters on Thursday night at Knox-Windham Gymnasium.
EWU's Mia Morel got free through a screen and drained her third 3-pointer of the game with 48 seconds left to tie the game at 56. A miss by
Iemyiah Harris gave the Tigers (6-3, 3-2 SIAC East) the ball and a chance to get a big road win. But
Tederia Ashley got a steal just outside the lane and was fouled. She calmly sank both of her free throws to put Miles (6-2, 4-1 SIAC West) ahead. On the ensuing possession,
Feliah Greer got her fifth steal of the night with three seconds left. She was fouled with .5 ticks on the clock and although she missed both free throws, it did not keep her from finishing with a double-double (12 points, 10 rebounds) or even give Edward Waters a chance for a last second heave as time ran out on the rebound.
The ending capped a nice comeback effort for the Lady Bears, who trailed by eight points at the end of the first quarter and led by just one point for 30 seconds in the opening half as Edward Waters went into the break with a 31-27 advantage. But an 8-0 run early in the second half got Miles rolling.
Kiyara Howard-Garza (seven points) had three points during the stretch and
India Brown's (four points) tip-in under the basket put the Lady Bears ahead 34-33. A steal and layup at the buzzed by Greer pushed the lead to 42-38 going into the final period.
Miles never led by more than six points in the fourth quarter but when Ashley scored with 1:37 remaining, the Lady Bears led by five and looked like had enough cushion against the feisty Tigers. But a three-point play by Leah Perry quickly cut the deficit to two points before Morel's 3-ball tied the score to set up the late-game theatrics.
Blesseth Dillingham (11 points) and Morel (10 points, six rebounds) were the top scorers for Edward Waters. Ashley finished with a game-high 15 points and nine rebounds and Harris added six points, four assists and three rebounds for Miles, which hosts Savannah State on Saturday at 1 p.m.
