Four Golden Bears scored in double figures and another had a near double-double as Miles turned the screws defensively in the second half en route to a 72-57 win over Edward Waters on Thursday at Knox-Windham Gymnasium. The victory was the fifth straight for Miles (9-2, 6-0 SIAC West) and keeps it undefeated in conference play.
The game was close in the early going but a dunk by
Dorion Staples less than seven minutes into the game gave Miles a 16-15 lead and Edward Waters (7-5, 3-2 SIAC East) never led again. The lead grew to 11 points on a
Chase Ballard jumper with less than three minutes to go in the opening half and a late bucket from
Elijah Horton sent the Golden Bears into halftime with a 41-33 advantage.
Miles would take control to start the second half, scoring the first 10 points.
Alvin Miles and Staples hit back-to-back 3-balls and an offensive rebound and put back by
Corey Trotter helped the lead swell to 18 points. Trotter (eight points, 11 rebounds, three blocks) would follow with a short jumper in the paint 90 seconds later and the Golden Bears would grab their biggest lead of the game - 55-35 - less than five minutes into the final period. EWU made a small run, closing to with 61-49 with nine-and-a-half minutes left.
During that run, Miles was just 3-of-9 from the field and turned the ball over four times. But when
Alvin Miles knocked down a jumper with seven minutes left, it got the Golden Bears back in the groove and Edward Waters never got closer. The Tigers did not have enough buckets in them in the second half, shooting just 29 percent from the field over the final 20 minutes.
Prince Davies (15 points) and Amari Floyd (11) were the top scorers for Edward Waters. The Golden Bears got big efforts out of Miles (season-high 24 points, five rebounds, two assists, a steal and a block),
Elijah Horton (16 points), Staples and
Najashi Tolefree (10 points each). Miles is back in action on Jan. 4 at Morehouse.
