Miles struggled against the constat pressure brought by Columbus State, dropping a 65-50 decision to the Lady Cougars Saturday at Knox-Windham Gymnasium.
The Lady Bears (0-1) turned the ball over 30 times, which led to 27 points by CSU. Miles did hold the Lady Cougars to less than 28 percent shooting from the filed and a significant edge on the glass (49-32). But Columbus State was near perfect in 24 trips to the charity stripe (22-of-24) to easily overcome those deficits.
Tawana Nevels and
Feliah Greer scored two quick buckets to give Miles an early advantage. But eight straight points by Columbus State gave it the lead for good. The Lady Bears trailed by six points at the end of the first quarter and had the deficit down to three when
India Brown scored to make it 22-19 with 4:46 left before halftime. But Miles made just 1-of-3 shots from the field and turned the ball over six times down the stretch to find itself in a 34-22 hole at the break. Greer scored to open the second half and get the Lady Bears to within 10 points but Columbus State never let Miles get any closer than that over the final 20 minutes.
Letiya Reeves had 15 points to lead all scorers for Columbus State. Greer (13 points, nine rebounds),
Makayla Rieves (10 points, seven rebounds), and
Madison Lee (five points, six rebounds, two blocks) were the top performers for Miles, which hosts Talladega on Tuesday. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
