Miles guard
Iemyiah Harris has been red-hot. The Lady Bears have been even hotter. The combination of both on Saturday afternoon was bad news for rival Tuskegee.
The 20th-ranked Lady Bears drained nine 3-pointers - eight in the second half - and shot 56 percent from the field over the final 20 minutes in blowing out the Golden Tigerettes 68-47 at Knox-Windham Gymnasium. Miles (15-1, 11-0 SIAC West), led wire-to-wire to earn its 15th consecutive win overall and 14th straight home victory.
The Lady Bears got contributions up and down the roster. Ten different players made a basket from the field. The team outrebounded Tuskegee 40-31 and had more assists (18) than the Tigerettes had made baskets (16). But Harris was an entire heat check in the second half and her shooting left Tuskegee's hopes in flames.
Tuskegee opened the second half with a bucket that cut its deficit to 19-18. But Harris got free in the corner and drained a three as she got fouled. She made the free throw for a four-point play. Two possessions later, Harris fed
Madison Lee for her own 3-ball to extend the lead. A 3-pointer by Sumaiyah Abdur-Rahim (20 points) was answered by another triple from Harris to open a 29-21 lead three minutes into the second half.
Later in the third quarter, the lead was still eight points when Miles blew the game open. A 13-2 run over a three-minute stretch was highlighted by two steals by
Tederia Ashley (four points, eight rebounds, four steals) and another by
Imani Williams (four points, four rebounds, four assists, two steals) led directly to scores on the other end. It culminated with another 3-pointer from Harris for a 46-27 lead with less than a minute remaining in the period.
But it was the start of the fourth quarter where Harris turned Knox-Windham upside down. Miles' first five shots from the field were three-pointers by Harris. She made four of them. Each shot attempt was from a different area of the floor, freeing from Tuskegee's futile attempts to guard her. As each successive shot popped the nets, it sent the capacity partisan crowd into an increasing frenzy. By the time the fourth 3-ball went through with 6:13 left, the Lady Bears led 58-39. In the second half alone, she made seven 3-pointers and scored 24 points. She finished with eight made threes and scored 27 points, four rebounds, two assists, two steals and two blocks.
The Lady Bears led by as many as 23 points in the fourth quarter in coasting to victory.
Asha Shareef (eight points, six rebounds, four assists) and
Kiyara Howard-Garza (six points, three assists) were among the top supporters of that effort. Miles is back in action on Monday when it hosts Spring Hill, Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
