JASPER, Ala. -- Miles opened conference play on Saturday at the SIAC Softball Crossover at Memorial Park. The annual event brings all of the league's softball teams to one location for three days of action. The Lady Bears got right to work, taking wins from Clark Atlanta, Fort Valley State and Edward Waters. Over the three games, Miles hit .386 as a team with
Kiana Terry,
DeOnia Gibby,
MaKenzie Stewart, and
Shalayiah Waid putting up big numbers. In the circle,
Abigail Boudreaux pitched in all three games, getting two wins in the process.
MILES 10, CLARK ATLANTA 7
The first game of the day was a back-and-forth affair until the Lady Bears scored seven times in the fifth inning to take the lead for good. Trailing 5-3, Gibby doubled to score Stewart and she came around after an error during
Genia Hall's at bat. Hall scored on a double by
Kiara Cobb, who then scored - along with
Destinee Smith - on a double by
Erielle Reid. Stewart then closed the frame with a 2-run single for a 10-5 advantage.
Boudreaux earned the win after allowing two earned runs and striking out two in three innings of relief. Miles pounded out 14 hits, with
Kiana Terry collecting a team-high three hits. Reid, Stewart, Gibby and Terry each had two RBI while Stewart and Terry each stole two bases.
MILES 10, FORT VALLEY STATE 2 (5 innings)
Down 1-0 in the second, Miles scored four runs in the second and five more in the third to take control of a game ended early by the 8-run rule.
Consecutive bases loaded singles by Cobb and
Kiana Terry (2 RBI) put Miles ahead. A RBI groundout by
Nyia Westbrook posted Miles to a 4-1 lead after the top of the second. In the top of the third, three straight singles loaded the bases before consecutive RBI singles from
Whitney Sellers, Cobb and
Kiana Terry plated the first three hitters. Sellers would score on a wild pitch and when the Wildcats tried to make a play at the plate, the ball got loose and Cobb scored from second to make the score 9-1.
Waid stole home in the fourth for a 10-1 lead, which was more than enough for
Shakayla Terry, who allowed just four hits and two earned runs while striking out three over 4 2/3 innings. Boudreaux got the final out in relief to close out the victory.
MILES 6, EDWARD WATERS 4
Westbrook had two hits, scored two runs and stole five bases, while Stewart (2-for-3, 2 RBI, two runs, two stolen bases) and Gibby (1-for-3, double, 2 RBI) provided the offense in support of Boudreaux, who scattered eight hits in a complete-game victory.
The Lady Bears never trailed. They scored twice in the first on a passed ball that plated Westbrook and a sacrifice fly by Gibby that scored Stewart. Miles tacked on two more runs in the third as Stewart doubled to left center to score Westbrook, then came around on a double to right center by Gibby. The Lady Tigers got two of those runs back in the bottom of the third but Miles responded in the first on run-scoring singles by Stewart and Waid.
Ahead 6-2, EWU got a 2-run, inside-the-park home run to halve the deficit and brought the winning run to the plate with no one out in the seventh. But Boudreaux got three straight outs to close out the win, which was the fifth straight for the Lady Bears.
