Four Golden Bears earn SIAC basketball honors

The Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference named its 2023 All-Conference Teams and league superlatives this weekend and four Miles student-athletes were feted for their performances during this season. Golden Bears Rodney Battle and Mykayle Carter and Lady Bears Iemyiah Harris and Madison Lee won awards as determined by votes of the conference's head coaches and media relations representatives.

Battle, a junior guard from Columbus, Ga., was named SIAC Newcomer of the Year and selected to the All-SIAC First Team. Battle is the Golden Bears' leading scorer and fourth in the SIAC. He is top-10 in scoring (16.5 points) while leading the league in field goals made (160) and was a double-figure scorer in 20 of 24 games this season. He had seven games with more than 20 points, including 29 points against Kentucky Wesleyan and 28 versus Spring Hill. He is also top-15 in field goal percentage (.468, 15th) and assists (2.7, 11th). He earned one Player of the Week and one Newcomer of the Week honor from the SIAC this season.

Harris, a sophomore guard from Anniston, Ala.,  was named SIAC Newcomer of the Year and selected to the All-SIAC First Team. She has been Miles' top player in her first season in Fairfield. She leads the team in scoring (15.6) - which is second in the SIAC. Her 406 points through 26 games is tops in the league, as well as her .369 3-point field goal percentage. She also leads the conference in 3-point field goals (73) by a wide margin (+22). Additionally, she is top-10 in assists (2.8, 9th), steals (2.31, 4th), and free throw percentage (.765, 7th) - the only player in the conference who can make that claim. She has 22 games in double-figure scoring, including a season-high 29 against Clark Atlanta, and has made at least two 3-pointers in 20 games, including a 7-of-8 performance against Stillman and making six 3-balls in both games versus CAU and once against Lane.

Her best performance came in a win over Central State where she had 14 points and 12 rebounds. She is the second straight Lady Bears to take home top freshman honors, following Imani Williams in 2022.

Carter, a sophomore forward from Lauderhill, Fla., is the second-ever winner of the league's Elite 14 award, which recognizes the student-athlete who has reached the pinnacle of competition at the SIAC championship level in their sport while also achieving the highest academic standard among their peers. He has a 4.0 grade point average in the classroom while averaging 8.0 points and 3.7 rebounds while shooting 32 percent on 3-point shots this season.
