Golden Bears shake off Rust

Corey Trotter had a monster game, posting a double-double and leading five Golden Bears in double-digit scoring Saturday afternoon against Rust. But the Golden Bears, who led by double figures with less than seven minutes remaining, had to come from behind with less than two minutes left to secure an 87-85 win over the Bearcats at Knox-Windham Gymnasium.

Rust went on a 12-1 run during a four-minute stretch late in the second half to take an 81-80 with 2:40 to go. But the Golden Bears (7-3) came right back, starting with a thunderous baseline dunk by Rylen Walker (15 points) to put Miles back in front. Trotter followed with a bucket to increase the lead to three points but the Bearcats tied the contest on a 3-point play by Bryson Wooten knotted the contest at 83 with 46 seconds remaining.

On the ensuing possession, Mykayle Carter (16 points, six rebounds) was fouled on a 3-point shot attempt. He drained all three freebies to put Miles ahead for good with 30 seconds remaining. After a Rust bucket, Walker split two free throws that pushed the lead to two points and the Bearcats took a shot to win the game. But Jamerick Moten's off balanced jumper came up short and the Golden Bears walked away with the victory.

It had been nearly two weeks since Miles had been in action and the Golden Bears were a bit slow out of the gate. The Bearcats led by as many as six points midway through the first half. But Carter had his 3-point stroke working in the opening period. He hit two straight 3-balls late in the first half to give the Golden Bears a 32-29 lead. He knocked down another jumper just before halftime to push the lead to seven points but Miles settled for a 49-44 lead at the break.

Khalil Brown scored 18 points and Jalin Thomas added 15 points to lead Rust. Trotter scored 22 points on 9-of-12 shooting and grabbed 14 rebounds - both game-highs - Elijah Horton had 11 points and James-Chase Ballard added 10 points and four assists for Miles, which hosts Albany State on Jan. 4. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
