Miles smothers Spring Hill

Four Lady Bears scored in double figures and Miles used its defense to score some easy buckets in handling Spring Hill 77-52 Monday night at Knox-Windham Gymnasium.

Miles (14-6, 10-5 SIAC West) forced the Badgers into 28 turnovers that led directly to 30 points, many of them (18) of the fast break variety as the Lady Bears beat Spring Hill (3-17, 2-12) up and down the court. The defense also shut down Tyashia Bostick, who missed all six of her field goal attempts and made just one free throw one week after going off for 32 points against the Lady Bears in Mobile.

The tandem of Tederia Ashley and Deresia Randle sparked a 9-0 run that gave Miles a 12-4 lead into the middle of the first quarter and the Lady Bears never looked back. Imani Williams got out on the break twice for easy buckets after Spring Hill turnovers in the final 70 seconds for an 18-10 lead at the end of the opening period. Williams (15 points, seven rebounds) got free for two more easy layups in the second quarter - the last coming after her steal and breakaway inside the final two minutes for a 10-point Lady Bears advantage - but the Badgers got two late baskets and trailed just 38-32 at halftime.

Thee Lady Bears blew the game open to start the second half. Spring Hill did not make a shot from the field for more than five minutes to open the third quarter. Meanwhile, the easy buckets kept coming in droves for Miles, which opened the stanza on a 15-2 run. Ashley (game-high 16 points, seven rebounds) had eight of those points, the last two coming on an offensive rebound and put back. When Kelli Finkley (five points)  was fouled on a made layup, she converted the free throw for a 3-point play and a 56-36 lead with 3:49 left in the quarter. Spring Hill never got closer than 14 points the rest of the way and Miles led by as many as 28 points in the fourth quarter as head coach Pete Asmond got everyone in uniform into the action in the final period.

Ariel Thompson had 13 points and eight rebounds as the only double-digit scorer for Spring Hill. Randle made all five of her shots from the field for 12 points and a game-high nine rebounds, Nuriyah Slaton had 11 points, six rebounds and three steals, and Iemyiah Harris added eight points, five rebounds, six steals and four assists for Miles, which plays at Central State on Thursday. Tip-off is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
