Three-point shooting propels Lady Bears

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- For the first time in nearly seven years, Miles traveled to take on Stillman in a meeting between old SIAC rivals Wednesday night. The Lady Bears (13-5) made a season-high 11 3-pointers and used a big second quarter to defeat the Lady Tigers 65-58 at Birthright Hall.

Iemyiah Harris was nearly unstoppable from beyond the 3-point arc, draining 7-of-8 from deep, as part of a 23-point performance where she was 8-of-11 from the field. Harris knocked down her first two 3-point attempts in the first quarter to help the Lady Bears to a 15-14 advantage . But it was a team-wide laser show from deep in the second quarter that gave Miles the big edge.

Eunique McKinney hit a 3-pointer just more than two minutes into the second quarter to give Miles a five-point edge. Two minutes later, she made another from deep to cap a 14-0 run to give Miles a 26-14 lead. Harris made her third 3-pointer of the night a minute later to extend the lead before Madison Lee made it rain from deep as Miles opened a 34-18 lead with 3:22 remaining before halftime. Stillman made a run going into the break but the Lady Bears still held a 34-26 lead heading into the third quarter.

Stillman remained competitive into the third quarter, but every time the Lady Tigers made a run, Harris had the answer from downtown. Each of her three 3-pointer in the period pushed the Miles lead back into double figures. The last came with 1:21 to go in the third that opened a 12-point advantage for the Lady Bears, who led 50-40 before playing the final 10 minutes.

To start the final quarter, Stillman had cut the deficit to eight points but, again, Harris answered with her seventh 3-pointer to push the Miles lead back to double figures. Tederia Ashley followed with a steal and layup on the ensuing possession and the Lady Bears were ahead 55-42 with eight minutes left. The Lady Tigers continued to battle, getting to within seven points inside of four minutes to play. But Dereseia Randle scored inside and followed with two free throws on the next possession to put Miles up 11 points. Stillman would close to within five points in the final minute before the Lady Bears closed out the victory.

Farrah Pearson scored 18 points and Laneja Warner added 13 for Stillman. McKinney scored 12 points off the bench and Ashley added 10 points for Miles, which hosts Tuskegee on Saturday. Tip-off is scheduled for 1 p.m.
