Miles saw the end of its eight-game win streak come Saturday during a second half meltdown at Tuskegee but started a new run by shooting a season-high 58 percent from the field in a win at Spring Hill on Monday. After scoring their second-fewest points in a 70-52 loss to the Golden Tigers, the Golden Bears notched their second-most points in a 77-65 win over the Badgers.
TUSKEGEE 70, MILES 52
Anything can happen in a rivalry game but when Miles jumped out 9-2 on Tuskegee in the first four minutes, it looked like the Golden Bears would be ready to roll to another big win. But the Golden Tigers responded with a 15-3 run over the ensuing seven minutes and those feelings quickly dissipated. The teams settled into a bit of a slugfest over the remainder of the first half and when
Mykayle Carter netted a 3-pointer with 1:49 to go before halftime, Miles had grabbed a one-point lead. But TU responded with two buckets - the last a 3-pointer from Devin Booker - and it went into the break with a 36-32 lead.
Unfortunately, Miles would never recover from the halftime deficit and for the first time all season, the Golden Bears did not hold the lead at any point during the second half of the contest. A jumper by
Yasim Hooker with 11:12 left brought Miles to within 44-39. But the Golden Bears made just one basket from the field over the next 10 minutes and Tuskegee put the game on ice. After
Corey Trotter's bucket with 6:44 to go, the Golden Tigers scored 13 consecutive points, capped by a D'Anthony Pennington bucket that made the score 64-43 with 2:29 left. TU led by as many as 23 points late as Miles shot just 26 percent from the field over the final 20 minutes.
Carter had a team-high 12 points while Hooker,
Rodney Battle and
Eddie Smith each had eight points for the Golden Bears.
MILES 77, SPRING HILL 65
One game after being held in single digits for just the third time this season,
Rodney Battle exploded for 28 points - one off his season high - on 10-of-15 shooting as the Golden Bears beat the Badgers for the 12th straight time.
Miles shot a shade under 45 percent in the first half in taking a 30-22 lead. The Golden Bears held Spring Hill to just one field goal over the final six minutes and pitched a shutout over the final 4:32. But the second half saw Miles become nearly unstoppable on the offensive end.
After ending the first half by scoring the final six points, Miles opened the second half by scoring the first nine points to take command. Battle was fouled as he drained a 3-pointer. He added the free throw and was followed by another 3-ball from
Eddie Smith (11 points, five assists) to give Miles a 39-22 lead two minutes into the final half. Both teams would knock down shots all over the floor. But while Spring Hill was shooting over 60 percent from the field (17-of-28) in the second half, Miles was connecting on 76 percent (16-of-21) of its shots. Every time the Badgers thought they could make a run, the Golden Bears had the answer, and then some. When
Mykayle Carter (six points) knocked down his 3-pointer with 5:30 left, Miles led 68-48. The lead would get as high as 21 points and Miles won going away.
Makai Vassell had 17 points and
Anthony Latty added five points and eight rebounds for Miles.
