EMERSON, Ga. -- In nine of the past 15 season, the Miles volleyball team had not been able to put together six wins over the entirety of its schedule. On Saturday, the Lady Bears capped a week where they won six matches in seven tries.
Miles won four of five matches at this year's SIAC Crossover event against East Division squads at the LakePoint Sports Complex, dropping the opener to Edward Waters before taking four straight wins over Fort Valley State, Allen, Benedict, and Clark Atlanta. The big showing pushed the Lady Bears' record to 11-5 overall, 5-2 against SIAC opponents.
On Friday, Edward Waters won in three sets (25-11, 25-23, 25-13) and Miles found itself down after three sets against FVSU before fighting back to take the final two set to win the match (21-25, 25-16, 15-25, 25-13, 15-12).
Alexandrea Wright (14 kills, 14 digs),
Valeria Lamar (14 kills, 20 digs), and
Anya Creecy (40 assists, 10 digs) each had double-doubles for the Lady Bears.
The Lady Bears used that momentum to power through three matches on Saturday.
Kiera Washington hit .444 with 19 kills and 11 digs as Miles swept Allen (25-20, 25-23, 28-26). In the second match against Benedict, both Washington and Wright each had 19 kills, Creecy had a career-high 44 assists and
Chaiza Jones set her season high with 40 digs as Miles won in four sets (25-20, 16-25, 27-25, 25-22). In a sweep over CAU (25-18, 25-14, 25-12), the Lady Bears hit a season-high .374 as a team, with Washington (17 kills, .444), Wright (10 kills, .500), and
Zykellia Blount (four kills, .444) leading the way.
Miles is back in action on Monday when it travels to take on Tougaloo. First serve is set for 6 p.m.
