ALBANY, Ga. -- Miles saw its season come to an end on Saturday after dropping a 6-1 decision to Benedict at the 2022 SIAC Softball Championship. The Lady Bears had just two hits and could not overcome the five errors which were instrumental in the two big scoring rallies for the Tigers.
The Lady Bears grabbed the lead in the third inning as
Destinee Smith reached on an error. The wild throw allowed her to advance all the way to third base. Three pitches laer, she scored on a passed ball for the first run of the contest. But the Tigers seized control of the contest in the bottom of the frame. With one out, three straight hitters reached, the last when no one covered first base on a sacrifice bunt attempt. A wild pitch allowed the first run to score to tie the game.
The big play happened after pitcher Mikayla Harris got a strike out for the second out. It would have been the third out of the frame, but to compound the earlier miscue, catcher
DeOnia Gibby's pick off attempt at third after the strikeout went into left field, allowing two more runners to score for a 3-1 Benedict advantage. The Tigers would add another run in the third and two more in the fifth to put the game out of reach.
Kiara Cobb (single) and Gibby (double) had the only two hits for Miles. Niya Westbrook stole two bases and Harris, who took the tough luck loss, allowed just six hits and struck out six for the Lady Bears.
