Golden Bears golf hits Vegas

LAS VEGAS -- The Miles golf team team opened its spring slate by heading west to compete in the Warrior Invitational at Stallion Mountain Golf Club, hosted by Winona State University. While the Golden Bears were in contention after the opening round, they could not cash in on the momentum, finishing 11th in the 15-team field.

In the opening round, Britton Khalaf and Magne Chamber-Wilson each shot 5-over 77 and Philip Darst was just one shot behind as Miles shot 312, which was tied for eighth and just eight strokes off the pace. But the five scoring players got off to a rough start on the second day, collectively shooting +22 through six holes. With 20 golfers shooting 2-over or better in the final round, it put the Golden Bears in a tough spot.

But Christian Copen, who shot 85 in the opening round and was at 8-over through eight holes in the final round, caught fire. He was 3-under over the final 10 holes, including an eagle on the par-5 6th (his 17th hole of the day) to finish at 5-over 77. That was only topped by Marquis Taylor, who played as an individual and shot 75 in the final round and finished his two-day total at 157, tied for 54th.

Khalaf, who was the one golfer that started well on Tuesday at 1-over through seven holes after a birdie on 12, could not stay low, shooting a 79 in the final round. He still was the Golden Bears' top performer, with his 156 good enough to tie for 52nd among the 107 golfers. Darst and Fred Windham each shot 81 in the final round as Miles shot a 318 on the final day.
