FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- At halftime of its South Region tournament quarterfinal with Union, Miles trailed by just two points but looked positioned to win and advance a step closer to a regional title.
But the first five minutes of the second half on Saturday night saw those plans unravel. The Golden Bears missed thier first 12 shots from the field in the second half, going 0-for-7 and turning the ball over four times inside the first six minutes, and the Bulldogs started the period on a 12-0 run en route to a 65-50 win, The loss ends Miles' season with a 24-5 mark while Union advances to play Nova Southeastern in the regional semifinals.
A single free throw by
Mykayle Carter (eight points, four rebounds, two blocks) was all that put Miles on the scoreboard in the second half before
Elijah Horton scored eight minutes into the period. By then, Union had opened an 18-point advantage.
Yasim Hooker took a feed from
Brandon Miller and slammed it home a minute later and he added a 3-ball with 7:57 left to cut the deficit to 11 points. Miller added his own 3-pointer inside of four minutes remaining that brought the Golden Bears to within 54-44.
But Miles would get no closer. The top defensive team in Division II allowed Union to shoot almost 44 percent from the floor - not a bad number but higher than what the Golden Bears normally allow. But the bigger issue was the offense struggled shooting the ball. The start of the second half contributed greatly to the 30-percent clip the Golden Bears shot for the contest.
The Golden Bears did shoot a respectable 40 percent from the field in the opening period. Miles never led in the opening period but did not trail by more than six points. Miller scored nine of his team-high 15 points in the first half, the last two coming on a bucket with 1:42 left to toe the game at 23. But Union's Hunter Vick scored on the ensuing possession and the Bulldogs went into the half with a 25-23 advantage.
Hooker scored 13 points and added five rebounds,
Joel Logan had six points and eight rebounds while
Anthony Fairley had two points, seven rebounds and two blocks for the Golden Bears.
