Lady Bears falter in Lane rematch

Miles erased a double-digit second half deficit but could not find the basket down the stretch in a 62-56 loss to Lane Tuesday night. The Lady Bears (13-5, 7-5), who earned a win in Jackson last week, fell a half-game behind the Lady Dragons (13-8, 8-5) in the SIAC West Division standings with three weeks left in the regular season.

Lane opened a 10-point lead a minute into the third quarter before Miles staged a rally. Breah McGrady and Nadia Cathey combined to score 10 consecutive points over the next two-and-a-half minutes to tie the game at 35. The Lady Bears shot 54 percent from the field during the period and when Markisha Body took a feed from Camryn London on the break with 26 seconds left, Miles would trail just 46-44.

London would knock down four free throws to start the fourth to give Miles the lead, and when Jakera Ellerbee connected on two free throws with 7:50 remaining, the Lady Bears were ahead 50-47. But while Miles was getting it done from the charity stripe in the final period (10-of-12), it was not happening from the field. When Body (nine points) knocked down a jumper with three minutes to go, it was the first - and last - field goal for the Lady Bears in the fourth quarter. Miles trailed by one point at the time but would never get any closer as it went 1-of-10 from the field over the final quarter.

Kayla Simmons scored 22 points and grabbed 17 rebounds to lead Lane. London scored 21 points, Cathey added 11 points, and Imani Williams had two points, 14 rebounds, four assists and two steals for Miles, which hosts Edward Waters on Thursday. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
