One week after Lane held Miles to its second-lowest point output of the season, the Golden Bears returned the favor Tuesday night at Knox-Windham Gymnasium. Miles played its best defensive game of the season, holding the Dragons to 24 percent shooting the from the field in a 61-39 win. It was the fewest points and the lowest shooting percentage the Golden Bears have allowed this season in winning their 12th straight game and the least amount of points Lane has scored in a game this season.
Lane did its best to try and slow the game down. Miles was just 2-of-7 from the field and turned the ball over seven times in the first nine minutes of the game. But the Golden Bears still held the lead at that point, and when they finally got it together on the offensive end, the Dragons were in trouble.Â
Miles used a 17-3 run over a nine-minute stretch to take control. During that time, Lane missed 10 consecutive shots from the field and turned the ball over six times as the Golden Bears did what they could to ensure that this game would not become a second-half grinder like it did in Jackson.
Mykayle Carter (game-high 16 points) drained three 3-pointers,
Truitt Spencer scored twice in the lane, and
Joel Logan and
Yasim Hooker added baskets that gave Miles a 21-7 advantage with 7:36 left in the first half.
Starting the second half with an 11-point deficit, Lane attempted to come back. Miles missed nine of its first 10 shot attempts in the second half and when Joseph Logan (Joel's brother) scored with 13:37 to go, the Dragons were down 32-28. But
Elijah Horton, Hooker and
Brandon Miller (five points, four rebounds, six assists) would combine to score the next 18 points for the Golden Bears and when
Joel Logan (six points, eight rebounds) converted a 3-point play with 3:20 remaining, Miles had opened a 53-33 lead. A four-point play by Carter and a bucket by Hooker pushed the advantage as high as 24 points in the closing moments.
Tomonique Marion had 10 points and 12 rebounds to pace Lane. Hooker had 14 points, 12 rebounds, three assists and four steals, Horton had 10 points and seven rebounds and
Anthony Fairley added four points and eight rebounds for Miles, which hosts Tuskegee on Saturday. Tip-off is scheduled for 3 p.m.
