Everyone around the Miles women's basketball program knows senior forward
Markisha Body as "Splash". On Tuesday night, it was LeMoyne-Owen that ended up all wet.
Body scored a game-high 20 points as she and fellow seniors
Nadia Cathey and
Camryn London went out on top in a 61-50 win over the Lady Magicians at Knox-Windham Gymnasium. The win snapped a two-game skid and settles the Lady Bears (17-7, 10-7) in third place among SIAC Western Division teams, breaking the tie with LOC (11-13, 9-7) with a season sweep.
Miles kept getting the ball to Body in the first quarter and she kept producing. She made 5-of-6 shots from the field and scored 12 points as the Lady Bears opened a 23-9 lead over LeMoyne-Owen after one quarter. London (eight points, three steals) scored a minute into the second quarter as the lead grew to 18 points, which was as large as it would get throughout the game. The Lady Magicians would get as close as eight points in the second half and were still down just nine points early in the fourth quarter. But
Shamaria Gaines (10 points, five rebounds) would take a feed from Body (who also had five rebounds, three assists and two blocks) with 7:45 to go to put the lead back into double figures. Then Splash rained down the Lady Bears only 3-ball of the game with less than four minutes to go for a 59-43 advantage that put the game out of reach.
Amil Mitchell had 10 points and five rebounds to lead LeMoyne-Owen. Cathey had four points, three rebounds, and two steals,Â
Imani Williams had seven points, a game-high 11 rebounds and five assists, and
Jakera Ellerbee added five points, six rebounds and two blocks for Miles, which hosts Albany State on Thursday. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
