Miles men's basketball adheres to the mantra "One Game at a Time", looking to stay in the moment and not look beyond any opponent.
With the SIAC Tournament right around the corner and the SIAC Western Division crown sewn up, looking ahead could have been an issue. But in front of a festive Senior Night crowd, the 23rd-ranked Golden Bears got the job done in a 67-57 win over LeMoyne-Owen at Knox-Windham Gymnasium. The victory sends Miles into the tourney on a school-record 17-game win streak and make it a big favorite to win a third consecutive league title.
The Golden Bears came out smoking, with
Yasim Hooker scoring getting three buckets as Miles opened a 12-2 lead inside of four minutes into the game. The lead was as high as 12 points but the Magicians closed the gap to two points late. Still,
Mykayle Carter ended the half as he started it, with a 3-pointer that sent Miles into the break with a 32-27 advantage.
But three minutes into the second half, the Magicians found themselves on top when Andrew Anderson knocked down a 3-pointer for a 35-32 lead. Miles missed its first seven shots of the half and LOC was able to take advantage. The Golden Bears trailed for the better part of four minutes but Hooker (23 points, seven rebounds) fed
Anthony Fairley (10 points, nine rebounds) to put Miles on top for good with 11:36 remaining. Then he got a steal and found Carter (12 points) for a breakaway dunk that was part of a six-point spurt and a 50-45 lead with 9:19 left. Over the last 11 minutes, though, the Magicians shot just 22 percent from the field (4-of-18) and turned the ball over five times, which was enough for Miles to pull away.
Anderson had 16 points to lead LeMoyne-Owen.
Brandon Miller had 10 points and five assists and
Joel Logan added three points and five rebounds for Miles.
