Golden Bears fall in double overtime

TUSKEGEE, Ala. -- Miles played a tough contest against rival Tuskegee but dropped a 26-23 decision in double overtime at Cleve L. Abbott Memorial Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The loss ends the Golden Bears 2022 season with a 1-9 record, 1-5 in SIAC play.

Roosevelt Thompson blocked a Tuskegee field goal attempt as time expired in the fourth quarter to force overtime. On the first play of the first extra period, former Golden Bear Donte Edwards scored from 25 yards out to give Tuskegee a 20-13 lead. Miles responded with its own score after a wild set of circumstances. Quarterback Jacob Millhouse looked as if he was about to score the tying touchdown but the ball bounded into the end zone and Tuskegee looked as if had recovered the loose ball.

But the officials ruled Millhouse down at the 1-yard line and Miles had another life. Two plays later, Millhouse mishandled the snap and the ball came loose again. The ball rolled into the end zone and was headed toward the end line, which would have been a touchback and ended the game. But offensive lineman Michael Goss jumped on the ball and gathered it in for a touchdown. The Jackson Spradlin extra point tied the game at 20.

Miles got the ball first in the second overtime and Spradlin nailed his third field goal of the game, this one from 24 yards, to put the Golden Bears on top. But Edwards converted a fourth-and-1 play before running the ball in from a yard out to give the Golden Tigers (8-2, 6-0 SIAC West) their eighth straight win.

Down 3-0, Spradlin nailed a 51-yard field goal in the first quarter to tie the contest. The Golden Tigers went back on top 6-3 before Jacob Keller (171 yards passing) connected with Jaih Andrews (five catches, 50 yards) for a 24-yard touchdown pass to give Miles a 10-6 lead. Jamarius Brown forced a fumble that was recovered by Chris Ware late in the first half and Miles responded with a 28-yard field goal from Spradlin as the clock expired in the second quarter for a 13-6 halftime advantage.

The Miles defense forced three turnovers and added two sacks but it was a big turnover by Tuskegee that set it up for its only touchdown in regulation. Damarhi Pettaway picked off Keller and returned it 38 yards to the Miles 15. Two plays later, Taurean Taylor ran it in from 13 yards out to tie the score at 13.

Aaron Frazier had 59 yards rushing and Jaylin Peterson had seven catches for 85 yards to pace the Miles offense. Defensively, Austin Brundidge had a team-high 11 tackles and James Sawyer had four tackles, an interception and two pass breakups.
