The Miles golf team closed out the fall portion of the 2022-23 season with a big win, taking the inaugural SAS HBCUÂ Division II tournament in a come-from-behind effort. The event was held as part of the annual SAS Tournament on the PGA Champions Tour at Prestonwood Country Club in Cary, N.C. from Oct. 15-16.
The Golden Bears entered the final round trailing Livingstone by six shots. But
Phillip Darst, who entered the final round at 1-over, caught fire on the final day. He had 10 birdies - including six over the final eight holes - to shoot a 7-under 63 on the round and finished at 6-under 204 for the tournament to overtake teammate Jerris Baker for medalist honors.
Head coach
Leonard Smoot was happy to see his team take control of the tournament on the final day, but was especially proud of Darst's performance, which was the best single-round in school history, besting the 64
Britton Khalaf shot last season at the Camp Lejeune Championships.
"I am very proud of this team because it is basically an entirely new team," Smoot said. "It was exciting to see
Phillip Darst shoot a 63 on his 21st birthday, especially considering how this time last year, he was dealing with the loss of his father. This was a great rebound for him and a great win for a new team."
There were five players jockeying atop the leaderboard, all within two shots of each other, and coming into the final round it was Baker who had the lead at even-par 140, which set the school mark for lowest 36-hole score in program annuls. He started the final round from the sixth hole and after playing 10 holes, he had three birdies and was 1-under for the round. On a day when seven golfers shot in the 60s, Baker finished at 2-under 68. But it was not enough to keep up with Darst as he finished four shots off the pace.
Khalaf (+4, 214) also finished well. He had four birdies and an eagle on the par-5 3rd hole to shoot a 68 in the final round that helped him finish tied for sixth. Malachi Greene (+20, 230) finished tied for 19th but had his best round of the tournament on Sunday, shooting 1-under on the back nine and finished at 3-over 73. While Jesse Williams had his best score in the second round (+4, 74), his struggles in the final round still allowed for eight pars and a birdie as he finished 22nd.
