Iemyiah Harris scored a game-high 18 points and Miles forced 23 turnovers that turned into 17 points in rolling to a 62-49 win over Fort Valley State Saturday afternoon at Knox-Windham Gymnasium.
The Lady Bears missed their first nine shots from the field and turned the ball over five times as the Lady Wildcats raced out to a 10-0 lead midway through the opening quarter. A 3-pointer by Harris finally got Miles on the board nearly six minutes into the period but from there, Miles was able to right the ship.
The quarter ended with the Lady Bears trailing by just four points but started a 10-0 run that pushed into the second period. Harris and
Nuriyah Slaton drilled consecutive 3-balls to open the frame that gave Miles the lead for the first time, and when Slaton knocked down two free throws, the lead was 19-15. Fort Valley would miss 11-of-15 shots and turned the ball over six times in the quarter and the Lady Bears would hold a 30-26 advantage at halftime.
FVSU continued to battle, taking a one-point lead after consecutive baskets by Torri Myers (eight points, nine rebounds). But two free throws by
Feliah Greer (seven points, seven rebounds) on the ensuing possession gave Miles a 33-32 lead midway through the quarter. The Lady Bears would close the quarter scoring the final six points to take a 45-36 lead into the final period. Miles would take control at the start of the fourth quarter, using a 13-2 run to put the game out of reach.
Tederia Ashley scored six points,
Eunique McKinney (nine points, three steals) added five more and Slaton (eight points, five rebounds) scored after an offensive rebound and assist from
Imani Williams (wo points, two assists, two rebounds, four blocks) to go up 58-38. The Lady Wildcats would not get closer than 12 points the rest of the way.
