Miles opened the 2022-23 campaign with a 78-57 win over Oakwood in the Lady Bears Tip-Off Classic Friday afternoon at Knox-Windham Gymnasium.
Iemyiah Harris scored a game-high 23 points and the Lady Bears (1-0) dominated the Lady Ambassadors (0-7) on the glass to hand Pete Asmond his first win as head coach.
The Lady Bears were never really threatened but the Lady Ambassadors kept it close in the second half. Trenisha Adams had the hot hand from long range, draining six 3-pointer. The last of them came with just under four minutes remaining in the third quarter to bring Oakwood to within 53-45.
But Miles switched gears defensively in the fourth quarter, holding the Lady Ambassadors without a field goal for more than six minutes to start the final quarter.
Kelli Finkley scored twice and a three-point play by
Tederia Ashley gave the Lady Bears a 70-51 advantage with 3:57 left. Oakwood would miss 11-of-14 shots from the field in the final period and Miles would outscore them 19-9 to win going away. The Lady Bears outrebounded the Lady Ambassadors 50-26, with
Desereia Randle (eight points, nine rebounds, two blocks),
Imani Williams (eight points, six rebounds) and Eunique Mckinney (10 points, six rebounds) leading the charge.
Adams scored 22 points and Brittany Lawless-Sherrill added 15 to lead Oakwood, which plays Savannah State in the second game of the Lady Bears Tip-Off Classic on Saturday at 6:30 p.m. Ashley had 13 points and
Feliah Greer added eight points for the Lady Bears, who close out the Tip-Off Classic against Savannah State on Sunday. Tip-off is scheduled for 1 p.m.
