Lane defeats Miles

Jacob Millhouse and Jaih Andrews connected for three fourth-quarter touchdowns but it was not enough to snap the Golden Bears' skid, falling 35-32 to Lane on Saturday at Sloan-Alumni Stadium. It was the third consecutive loss for Miles (1-6, 1-3 SIAC West), which is virtually eliminated from contention for a fourth straight Western Division title.

Mitchell Smiley (six tackles) had a 68-yard interception return for touchdown in the second quarter but the Golden Bears still trailed 28-12 after three quarters. The Miles offense had not scored a touchdown in three weeks and comeback efforts looked dim. But Millhouse hit Andrews on scoring passes of 23, 30 and 17 yards in an eight-minute span, the last coming with 1:17 left in the contest. But Lane (4-3, 3-1) recovered the onside kick and ran out to clock to preserve the victory.

Millhouse threw for 206 yards and was Miles' leading rusher with 62 yards on the ground. Andrews had six catches for 98 yards and Jaylin Peterson added four grabs for 69 yards. Roc Dowdell (seven tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, one sack), Kaleb Cline (seven tackles, six solo) and Quinci Nelms (four solo tackles, forced fumbles) were among the leaders for the defensive unit that forced four turnovers, added two sacks, and blocked a punt.

Miles is next in action on Saturday when it hosts Kentucky State. Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.
