FRANKFORT, Ky. -- Miles concluded its 2020-21 basketball season with a pair of contests at Kentucky State. While the Lady Bears (9-12) were able to get a 50-41 win on Friday night, the season came to a close on Saturday with a 50-46 defeat to the Thorobrettes at the Exum HPER Center.
FRIDAY - Miles 50, Kentucky State 41
Miles trailed by seven points late in the third quarter but scored the final 13 points of the contest to win going away. When Andrea Wallace scored with 6:15 left in the game, KSU held a 41-37 lead. But those would be the last points scored against the Lady Bears defense as the Thorobrettes would miss their final eight shots from the field - seven of them 3-pointers - as well as their two free throw attempts.
Katrice Jackson,
Nadia Cathey and
Raiana Johnson each had four points in the game-ending 13-0 run. But it was a
Je'Keria Strickland free throw with 2:58 to go that gave Miles the lead for good. It did not appear that the Lady Bears would even need that kind of finish at the beginning. All four of their made field goals in the first quarter were 3-pointers, two from
Markisha Body and one each for
Tomesia Staten and Cathey as Miles led 14-11 after the first 10 minutes.
But Miles went cold in the second quarter, getting just a lone basket from Johnson (nine points, six rebounds) in 12 shot attempts and tailed 22-17 at the break. The Lady Bears would go 12 minutes between field goals and their deficit would reach seven points with 2:17 left in the third.
Wallace was the high scorer for Kentucky State eight points and five rebounds. Jackson (14 points, 10 rebounds) posted a double-double for the second straight game and Cathey added 14 points to lead the Lady Bears.
SATURDAY - Kentucky State 50, Miles 46
The game had some big momentum swings for both sides but a 3-pointer from Wallace with 30 seconds remaining gave KSU the lead for good.Â
The Thorobrettes scored the first eight points of the game and led 15-2 with 3:48 left in the first quarter. But from there, Miles got real stingy defensively, nearly pitching a complete shutout in the second quarter. A
Breah McGrady 3-pointer with 6:13 left before halftime gave Miles a 16-15 lead. The only bucket KSU scored in the second quarter came from Wallace with less than 50 seconds left in the period. Even after breaking the 12-minute scoring drought, KSU trailed 18-17 at the half.
The second half turned into a slugfest with 12 ties and six lead changes between the two sides. Miles' biggest lead was by four points, 34-30, after
Kierra Patrick (seven points) drained two free throws. Kentucky State would ultimately open a three-point advantage but Cathey would knock down a jumper with just less than a minute to go that tied the score at 43. On the ensuing possession, Wallace would answer with a 3-ball that put KSU back on top. The Lady Bears would get as close as two points late but Lyndsey Downing made two free throws for the final margin.
Downing (18 points), Wallace (16 points, 10 rebounds) and Sarah Woghiren (nine points, nine rebounds) lef Kentucky State. Cathey had 14 points and Johnson had 12 points and eight rebounds to pace the Lady Bears.
