Every win is not built on great shooting or momentous plays. Sometimes, a team has to work through some uneven play to find its way to the victory circle.
That is what happened in Miles' 58-39 win over Allen Monday night at Knox-Windham Gymnasium. Neither team shot the ball particularly well and combined for 60 turnovers. The Lady Bears (7-1) trailed early but methodically worked through its issues to win going away.
Miles trailed by four points early in the second quarter and went nearly nine minutes without making a bucket. But Allen (3-6) could not take advantage. The Lady Bears started attacking the basket and
Deresia Randle was the beneficiary as she knocked down 4-of-6 free throws. When
Nadia Cathey got a steal and ensuing bucket, Miles had taken a 13-11 lead with 5:28 left in the first half and would not trail again. Cathey would grab another of her six steals and and fed Randle for a basket right before halftime for a 25-18 lead going into the break.
Markisha Body (three points, five rebounds) scored the first points of the second half to give Miles a double-digit lead for the first time. The Yellowjackets would get as close as eight but when
Tenasia Gordon (four points, three rebounds) scored on an offensive rebound and putback midway through the third quarter, Miles led 31-20 and Allen would never get closer than 10 points for the rest of the contest.
Jayda Jackson led Allen in scoring with seven points. Cathey scored a game-high 16 points and added five rebounds, Randle posted a double-double (10 points, 12 rebounds, two blocks, three steals) and
Tahlor Sutton had six points and five steals for Miles, which plays at Savannah State on Saturday. Tip-off is scheduled for 1 p.m.
