FRANKFORT, Ky. -- With two weeks remaining in the regular season and just a one game lead in the race for the SIAC Western Division crown entering play Monday night, Miles knew that it would have to find way to put away a Kentucky State team that nearly won in Fairfield last month despite having just four players on the court.
But down by four with less than three minutes to go, the Lady Bears needed some magic to hold on to their precarious lead atop the West. Spurred by its defense, Miles (16-7, 11-4) closed the game on a 10-2 run to leave the Exum Center with a 50-46 win over the Thorbreds (7-16, 4-12). The victory helped the Lady Bears sweep the season series against KSU and reach their most conference victories since winning 13 SIAC games during the 2011-12 campaign.
When Carnethia Brown scored for KSU with 2:45 remaining, the Thorobreds led 44-40 and the prospects of earning a victory looked grim for the Lady Bears. They were in the midst of a six-minute span where they had missed 8-of-10 shots from the field and had held a one-point lead for less than a minute during the final period. But the top scoring defense in the SIAC was finally able to get some stops, which turned the game around.
Two
Mya Millner free throws cut the deficit in half before Miles forced a turnover on the other end.
Victoria Sutton would take a feed from
Sakina Wynn and knock down a jumper to tie the game at 44 with 1:47 remaining, After a timeout, the Lady Bears defense went back to work. Wynn got a steal and scored on the breakaway to put Miles on top 46-44 with 89 seconds left.
The Lady Bears would force turnovers on KSU's next two possessions as well. When Wynn knocked down two free throws, it completed a two-minute span where Miles scored eight consecutive points. After the Brown basket had put the Thorobreds ahead, Miles did not allow another basket from the field. In fact, Kentucky State was only able to get off two shots - both inside the final 10 seconds of the game - as the Lady Bears would force five turnovers down the stretch.
Brown had 13 points and Erica Jones added 11 for Kentucky State. Wynn (10 points, 4 rebounds, 3 steals) and Sutton (10 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists) were the leading scorers while
Amya Bryant (9 points) and
Raiana Johnson (3 points, game-high 10 rebounds, 3 blocks) both played well for Miles, which hosts Spring Hill on Thursday. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
