WILBERFORCE, Ohio -- The rate at which Miles has won games this season, it would seem that one might run out of adjectives or plaudits to bestow on a team that has consistently throttled its opponents.
But Saturday afternoon, the Golden Bears ascended to another level of excellence as it devoured Central State 86-61 at Beacom-Lewis Gymnasium. The win was the 10th straight for Miles (18-3, 13-2 SIAC West), which has not had a double-digit, in-season win streak since winning 12 straight during the 1973-74 campaign. The 18 wins this year is already fifth-most in program history for a single season, surpassed only by four 20-plus win campaigns.
For a team that normally stymies opponents with defense, Miles used an offensive display to break the game open early.
Avery Brown had the best game of his career, setting personal highs in points (30) and rebounds (11), and placing himself squarely in the conversation for SIAC Player of the Year honors. His basket just more than five minutes into the game gave the Golden Bears its first double-digit lead at 13-2. With another Brown bucket two minutes later, the score was 17-7 and CSU would trail by double digits for the rest of the contest.
Miles was anywhere but close to finished with its first half dismantling of the Marauders (13-11, 9-7). The Golden Bears were scoring almost at will, with the chasm between the two teams widening with each possession. A 3-point play by
Ryan Calhoun with 5:40 left in the first half opened a 40-10 advantage, the 30-point difference the largest during a first half this season. That capped a 27-3 jaunt for the Golden Bears, a domination so thorough that Central State went more more than 12 minutes without a basket from the field. For a good portion of the first half, Miles had more made buckets than CSU had points as it went into halftime with 43-24 lead.
The halftime break allowed Central State to gain a bit of resolve as it got to within 14 points inside of the first four minutes of the second half. But the Marauders defense had no answer for the Golden Bears, who shot 60 percent from the field over the final 20 minutes. Miles responded with a 14-3 spurt as Brown would score eight points and
Frank Royles' (6 points, 9 rebounds, 3 assists) emphatic two-handed dunk along the baseline highlighted the stretch that pushed the lead to 60-35 with 12 minutes left. The lead never dipped below 20 points the rest of the way.
Darweshi Hunter scored 22 points and Harris Brown added 13 to lead Central State.
Jelani Watson-Gayle (21 points),
Braeden Stewart (10 points) ,
Joel Logan (8 points, 11 rebounds, 2 blocks) and
Richard Feagin (6 points, 7 assists) had solid efforts for Miles, which travels to Kentucky State on Monday. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
