MOBILE, Ala. -- An old adage is that for teams to have a good season, they have to win all of their home games and at least half of their road contests.
On Monday night, the Golden Bears continued to show that they are better than good. With five players scoring in double figures and shooting nearly 54 percent from the field, Miles wrapped up a perfect three-game road swing with a 72-57 win over Spring Hill at the Outlaw Recreation Center. The win was the fourth straight overall for the Golden Bears (12-3, 7-2 SIAC West), who are now 6-2 on the road. It also marked the fourth consecutive time the Golden Bears have knocked off the Badgers (3-15, 2-7).
While the Badgers have struggled this season, they played well early against the Golden Bears. But after trailing by two points after eight minutes of play, Miles took over. Sparked by a
Richard Feagin 3-pointer, the Golden Bears went on an 11-0 run. Spring Hill went more than six minutes without a field goal as Miles opened a 26-17 lead with 6:45 left in the first half.
Miles would lead by as many as 10 points in the first half but went into the half with a 35-27 advantage.
Jelani Watson-Gayle (18 points, 4 rebounds) drained a 3-pointer to start the second half to push the lead to 11. Still, the Badgers would continue to battle. Two Gresyn Rogers free throws cut the deficit to 48-45 with 11 minutes remaining.
But the Golden Bears had another run in them to put the game out of reach. Miles would score nine straight points over the next three minutes to push the lead back into double figures and after a steal by
Joel Logan (10 points, 5 rebounds, 3 blocks) turned into a fastbreak basket by
Avery Brown, the lead was 63-47 - the largest of the game - with just more than six minutes to go. Spring Hill would not get any closer than eight the rest of the way.
Christian Brandt scored 15 points while Dwight Harris and Chase Shellman each scored 11 points for Spring Hill. Brown (19 points, 5 steals),
Braeden Stewart (10 points, 7 rebounds), and Feagin (10 points, 3 assists) all scored into double figures for Miles, which hosts Kentucky State on Saturday. Tip-off is scheduled for 3 p.m.
