Easy Street(er): Miles wins PHA Classic

Miles junior running back Wade Streeter entered Saturday's game against Morehouse with 58 career rushing yards in his first two season with the Golden Bears. With Miles getting 100-yard performances from De'Rell Freeman and Donte Edwards in a season opening win, there wasn't much belief that he would substantially add to that total.

But after an injury to Freeman thrust him into action, Streeter put on a show. He ran for 192 yards and scored two touchdowns as Miles throttled Morehouse 45-21 to win the Prince Hall Americanism Football Classic at Sloan-Alumni Stadium. The Golden Bears (2-0) led 38-0 midway through the third quarter before coasting to victory.

After losing to the Maroon Tigers (1-2) on a touchdown pass as time expired last year, head coach Reginald Ruffin wanted to put enough distance between his team and the visitors to take away that possibility. Daniel Smith threw a 6-yard touchdown pass to LaAnthony Robinson on the opening drive to give Miles a 7-0 lead. On the ensuing kickoff, kicker Brady Hammel executed an onside kick that Miles recovered on the Morehouse 16-yard line. Four plays later, Smith ran it in from 3 yards out and it was 14-0 less than six minutes into the game.

That, apparently, wasn't enough for the Golden Bears. On the next kickoff, they again recovered an onside kick. While Miles would turn it over on the next play, the Golden Bears would run 17 plays before the Maroon Tigers ever touched the ball.

Morehouse would drive the ball to the Miles 1. On first down, the Golden Bears would stuff running back Santo Dunn for no gain. On the next play, Kadarius Roberts knocked the ball from Dunn and Terry Beckham would recover the fumble to thwart the threat. That would begin a stretch of four straight possessions with turnovers for the two teams, but it was during that time that Freeman (41 yards rushing) injured his ankle and would not return.

When Miles got the ball back in the second quarter, Streeter went to work. His first run of the night covered 13 yards. His next run was a 36-yard jaunt that got Miles to the Morehouse 1, where quarterback Li'Jon Cordier would punch it in for a 21-0 advantage with 4:44 left before halftime.

With less than a minute to go in the half, Streeter would find paydirt again. He covered the last 44 yards of a 54-yard drive on his own, the final 20 coming on a touchdown run with 30 seconds left. When Miles went to the half with a 28-0 lead, Streeter had five carries for 93 yards, eclipsing his career total.

The Golden Bears went right back to Streeter in the second half. He caught one pass for 17 yards but mostly did his work on the ground. His 35-yard touchdown run finished a 10-play, 71-yard drive for a 35-0 lead. Jackson Spradlin would connect on a 31-yard field goal with 4:20 left in the third quarter to give Miles a 38-0 advantage.

While Miles was moving the ball to the tune of 255 rushing yards, Morehouse had no such luck. The Maroon Tigers were held to minus-7 yards rushing on 19 carries. This season, the Golden Bears have held their two opponents to 5 total rushing yards.

N'Ktavious Floyd closed out the scoring for the Golden Bears with a 53-yard interception return for a score. Morehouse got three touchdown passes from backup quarterback Jalen Brown after the outcome was well decided.

Miles is back in action on Saturday when it travels to play Missouri S&T. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
