JASPER, Ala. -- The Miles softball team went 1-4 during the SIAC Crossover at Memorial Park with the lone victory coming in a 15-0 romp over Paine on Day 2. But while wins and losses are important in qualifying for the SIAC Championships in May, the Lady Bears showed they were on the right track towards more wins and claiming one of the four spots from the Western Division.
After getting just three hits in dropping the opener 8-0 to Clark Atlanta, the offense began to show signs of life. The Lady Bears had eight hits in losses to Fort Valley State and Albany State, which is tied for the second-most hits they've had in any game this season. The most is 16, the total accumulated in the win over Paine.
The losses to Fort Valley State (3-1), Benedict (3-1), and Albany State (6-5) were competitive, with Miles holding a late lead against the defending champion Golden Rams. Some tough plays on the base paths short-circuited a few rallies that might have changed the results in those contests.
Individually,
Kristie Looney made the All-Crossover team, hitting .385 with four runs scored and four stolen bases while playing strong outfield defense.
Davis Watkins had the most hits (eight), hitting .500 with two runs batted in and four runs scored. Alexus Gonzales (.556, two doubles, two RBI) andÂ
Zakierra Webb (team-high five RBI, three stolen bases) also were strong at the plate.Â
In the circle,
Chynna Gross picked up the only win and
Magen Rich had the most strikeouts (seven), but freshman
Zamiyah Williams pitched the most innings (13) and showed that she can be an arm head coach
Patrick Peasant can count on as the team moves into the meat of its conference schedule.
Miles is back in action on Tuesday when it hosts Mississippi College in a doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
